Sinhalese

-Started about 543 B.C.E.

-They believe they are descendants of Prince Vijaya.

-Most Sinhalese people live in Sri Lanka today.

Location

Most of the Sinhalese people today live in Sri Lanka, a small island off the southern coast of India. The national capital of Sri Lanka is Colombo. There,the climate is tropical monsoon weather most of the year.

Religion

In Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese people are Theravada Buddhists and Muslim, but there are a small
amount of Christians as well. Besides Buddhism, they believe they are descendants of a Prince.


World Religions

Language

The official language of the Sinhalese people is called Sinhala. As of now, it is spoken by more than 16 million people in Sri Lanka as well as another 3 million in other countries. (16th most spoken language)

The Sinhalese people have many similar cultural characteristics that are also common in India, such as curry and rice related dishes.

Family Life

In the Sinhalese culture, the higher the social class means the higher they are in their system of hierarchy.

Children are taught Buddhist at a very young age and they do not respect English respect the English style of teaching.

Sports & Games

There are many games played by the Sinhalese people. The two major sports played are soccer and cricket.
