Every language has a group of letters, it is unique to that language. This group of letters is called the “alphabet”. The main language of Sri Lankans is called “Sinhalese”. The Sinhala alphabet is not born once. It is a result of formations for thousands of years. Currently, It is identifying as the “Present Sinhala Alphabet”, letter series that is using now. we can learn many facts about the evolution of the Sinhala language If we can learn the history of this letter series. This knowledge is necessary to know the current Sinhala alphabet. But there is no acceptable number of letters yet. There have different alphabets and different numbers of letters as follows.
- Prakrurtha Sinhala alphabet: 25 letters
- Siddath Sangara Alphabet: 30 letters
- Holy Sinhala alphabet: 32 letters
- Mixed Sinhala alphabet: 54 letters
- Adhyathana Sinhala alphabet: 60 letters
The number of letters in the present Sinhalese alphabet is still controversial. The letter series which was used in the fourth century is called the Prakrutha Sinhala alphabet. It used 25 letters.
This letter series was systematically changed for the present. Scientists think they were prepared according to the Brahmi letter series.
Siddath Sangara Alphabet contained 30 letters. Earlier, The alphabet does not include the “ඇ, ඈ” letters. Those two letters join the Sinhala language during the medieval era.

The mixed Sinhala alphabet is made by adding Mahaprana letters and “ඍ, ඎ, ෆ, ෆෘ” letters. It’s fifty-four letters.
After that, Commonly accepted by all to remove two letters “ෆ, ෆෘ”.
The present Sinhala alphabet has contained 60 letters. Knowing this letter series doesn’t mean knowing the Sinhala alphabet completely. Every Vowel has a unique voice and Every consonant has built by combining a vowel. Those letters are known as Ghosha, Aghosha, Alpaprana, Mahaprana etc.
Language is the media of man’s thinking. We were able to think, write, say, read through the glory of that language. It’s necessary to handle the language properly for clear thinking and expression which is the instrument of thinking. The smallest part of the sounds we make with the support of the tongue, lips, teeth, throat are called letters. The letter “අ” is recognized as the first letter in the Sinhala language. We can express our thoughts by matching some of those letters. We call the few letters that match so meaningfully as words. A group of words that post such a complete idea are sentences and we express our thoughts using them.
Sinhala is the language of the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. It’s over three thousand years old. The Sinhalese language that has grown by mixing with other languages in this long time has become the standard language in the world today. The Sinhala alphabet has been selected among the five most beautiful languages among the hundreds of languages in the world.
